FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What happens during the Consultation Call?
The Consultation Call is an opportunity to determine if we will be a good fit. I’ll send you a brief survey before our call to learn more about your current challenges and what you’re hoping to get out of therapy. On the call, I’ll ask more in-depth questions, tell you more about what it’s like to work with me, and answer any questions you might have. During this call, you may become a client and move forward with starting therapy, or I might provide you with referrals for a better fit.

What does a typical session look like?
Counseling sessions typically last 50 minutes. Sessions usually begin by providing information about the previous week and setting a goal or an intention for the session. Then, we will work together using CBT and MI techniques to develop solutions to the problems that brought you into therapy. We will close the session by summarizing what was discussed and assigning tasks for you to work on between sessions. For more information about therapy for specific concerns, check out the Services section.

How often will we meet and how long will I be in therapy?
This answer depends largely on what type of challenges you are facing and how long you have been struggling before seeking support. Typically, clients see the most success when they meet with me weekly. Clients often see significant improvement within 8-12 weeks, but your therapy may be longer or shorter depending on your goals and the complexity of issues you are bringing to therapy.

I work during the day. Do you offer evening or weekend hours?
I have a limited number of evening appointments each week. I do not offer weekend sessions.

I don’t think I’ll be able to commit to weekly sessions. Could I just come every other week or once a month?
In my experience, clients see the most benefit when they are able to commit to weekly therapy sessions upfront. This allows me to get to know you and your unique challenges, and tailor tools to help. It’s difficult to build momentum working together every other week or once a month. Clients often reduce their number of monthly sessions as they start to feel better.

If finances are a barrier to participating in weekly therapy, let’s talk.

I’m not able to make it into the office for appointments. Do you offer online counseling or tele-health?
Yes! You can find out more about online counseling by looking under the “Services” tab.

How do I make an appointment?
I offer 24/7 scheduling via the website. This allows you to schedule quickly at a time that is convenient to you. Once you've scheduled, I will follow up with a quick email containing the paperwork and the next steps.

How do I make a referral for a patient?
We receive referrals from a variety of medical professionals in western North Carolina, and we engage in collaborative care by providing regular progress updates where appropriate.

Making a referral for your patients to get therapy is simple. We typically follow up with clients within 48 hours.

Are therapy sessions covered by my insurance?
At this time, I am an out-of-network provider with most insurance companies. (I am in network with Aetna and BCBS for NC residents.) That means you're responsible for the fee at the time of our appointment and, depending on your plan, 60-80% of my fee may be paid to you by your insurance company.

I am happy to provide more information about this option during your consultation call.

Why are you Out-of-Network?
Being an out-of-network provider allows me to provide the highest quality, most flexible care to meet your unique needs. By participating as an out-of-network provider, our work won’t be constrained by session time limits or a maximum number of “covered” sessions. We can collaborate on how you’d like to participate in therapy (phone, video or in-person), and I can also employ creative strategies designed to give you the best results without worrying about if they “qualify” for reimbursement.

Getting Reimbursed

While I am not in network with many insurance providers, I understand that you may still wish to use your out-of-network benefits for reimbursement. Many clients have out-of-network benefits, but may not understand how to use them. I will provide you with a SuperBill that you can file with your insurance company for full or partial reimbursement.
